TWENTY STUDENTS OF 2ND ESO PERFORMED A PLAY
BY SHAKESPEARE IN LONDON

Twenty students of 2nd ESO at IES Marqués de Santillana performed an abridged version of 'A Midsummer Night´s Dream', by William Shakespeare, at a London theatre in November 2014. IES Marqués de Santillana is one of the very few non-UK schools that participated in this year´s edition of Shakespeare Schools Festival, alongside with schools from Russia, China, Tunisia, Israel and the USA. This has been the festival´s 14th edition, which started in 2000. The play was performed at the 'Watermans Arts Centre' in London before a 200 strong audience.
No doubt the prospect of performing in London before an audience of English native speakers was intimidating. As Sara Huelga, who played the role of Snout, puts it, "Everything was intimidating! Would we do it well? Would they understand us? The expectations were enormous!" The dress rehearsal didn’t go so well; however, as the big moment was approaching, the young actors plucked up the courage to confront the audience and delivered the performance of their lives. David Quinzaños, who played Puck, recalls the moment very vividly: “The final hour arrived, the performers before us were finishing, and we took the stage. This scene was brutal with more than 200 people there to see us, but we gave it our all. Finally we had finished, they were applauding and didn´t stop applauding! We felt unbelievably good!". Sara Huelga adds: “Even though we initially felt nervous we took the stage and slowly but surely began to feel comfortable. The result: lots of applause, lots of praise, and we were full of pride. It had gone perfectly. It was an incredible feeling that we´ll surely never forget. The deed was done!”
The students had started rehearsing a year before, but the idea of taking part in Shakespeare Schools Festival came up only in May, just after the two performances at IES Marqués de Santillana Hall. When it was presented to the parents, they loved it and some actually joined the troupe. Raquel Gutiérrez, who played Titania, admits: “I remember that when the trip was coming together I felt torn inside. On one hand I felt extremely happy to confirm my attendance, but on the other hand, I was not excited that my mother would be accompanying me. The truth is that I never liked the idea of being accompanied by ¨mommy¨, but later I really appreciated her presence. She remembers being my age and gave me the independence that I needed during the entire trip.”
Apart from performing the play, the trip was packed with interesting activities including a visit to the British Museum, guided tours at Shakespeare’s Globe and the National Gallery, dinner at Hard Rock Café and some shopping in Camden Town. Clara Saiz (Hermia) adds: “Everything was so impressive that it still hasn´t set in that we were in London. I would go back right now!”, a feeling shared by Adriana Pérez, Verónica García and Yaiza Aragón, who played the roles of Oberon, Bottom and Hippolyta. “We could never have imagined to do something like that. This has been an unforgettable experience”, they summed up.

REPRESENTAN UNA OBRA DE SHAKESPEARE EN LONDRES

Veinte alumnos de 2º ESO del IES Marqués de Santillana representaron ‘El sueño de una noche de verano' de William Shakespeare en un teatro londinense dentro del Shakespeare Schools Festival el pasado mes de noviembre. El IES Marqués de Santillana fue uno de los cinco centros no británicos que participó en la última edición del Shakespeare Schools Festival, a la que concurrieron más de un millar de centros educativos de todo el Reino Unido.

La representación tuvo lugar en el Watermans Arts Centre ante doscientas personas. Sin duda, la perspectiva de actuar en Londres frente a un público inglés intimidaba. Como dice Sara Huelga, que interpretó el papel de Snout: "¡Muy grande todo! ¿Lo haríamos bien? ¿Nos entenderían? La expectación era enorme…". El ensayo general no fue especialmente bien. Sin embargo, cuando llegó el momento de la verdad, los jóvenes actores reunieron el valor para enfrentarse al auditorio y ofrecieron unas interpretaciones memorables. David Quinzaños, que encarnó a Puck, recuerda el momento con mucha nitidez: "Llegó la hora final, los artistas anteriores estaban acabando y llegamos a escena. La imagen de ese momento era brutal, más de 200 personas ahí para vernos, así que salimos para esforzarnos... Al terminar, sentimos que por fin lo habíamos conseguido, nos estaban aplaudiendo, no parábamos de escuchar aplausos, ¡nos sentíamos imparables!". Sara Huelga lo vivió de manera semejante: "Aunque todos estábamos nerviosos, pisamos el escenario despacio y con seguridad y poco a poco, según transcurría la hora, nos fuimos poniendo cómodos. El resultado: muchos aplausos, muchas alabanzas, muchos elogios y mucho orgullo. Había salido todo perfecto. Era una sensación indescriptible, maravillosa y que no se nos olvidará nunca. ¡¡El deber estaba cumplido!!"

Los alumnos, pertenecientes al Programa Bilingüe de Inglés, empezaron a ensayar la obra en septiembre de 2013, pero la idea de participar en el Shakespeare Schools Festival no surgió hasta mayo de 2014, al término de las representaciones que ofrecieron en el salón de actos del instituto. Cuando se planteó la posibilidad a los padres, les encantó y de hecho algunos se animaron a viajar a Londres para asistir a la representación. Raquel Gutiérrez, que interpretó el papel de Titania, recuerda que "el día en el que se gestó la posibilidad del viaje tuve un sentimiento muy contradictorio, por una parte una alegría inmensa al confirmar mi asistencia y una no tan buena: mi madre acudía conmigo". "La verdad es que no me agradó la idea de ir acompañada de mamá, pero luego me alegré mucho de su asistencia, ella lo vivió tanto o más que yo, y me dio la independencia que necesité en cada momento".

Aparte de representar la obra, el viaje estuvo lleno de actividades como una visita al Museo Británico, visitas guiadas al Shakespeare’s Globe y a la National Gallery, cena en el Hard Rock Café y compras en Camden Town. Para Clara Saiz (Hermia), todo resultó tan intenso que "todavía no he asimilado que haya estado en Londres, volvería ahora mismo", una sensación compartida por Yaiza Aragón, Adriana Pérez y Verónica García, que encarnaron los personajes de Hippolyta, Oberon yBottom: "Nunca habríamos imaginado que podíamos hacer algo así. Ha sido una experiencia inolvidable", resumen.
